Two Yemeni tribesmen were killed and five others wounded in an explosion in a village in the restive southern province of Abyan, a stronghold of Al-Qaeda, tribal sources told AFP. "Seven of our armed men were wounded by an explosive device in Mudia, and two of them died of their injuries," one of the sources, who asked not to be identified, told AFP.
Another tribal source blamed Al-Qaeda for the deadly blast.
"They planted the device" in the tribal village of Mudia, the source said.
The Islamist network "targets tribesmen because they are preventing them from operating on their territory," the source said.
Battles between the army and Al-Qaeda-linked militants of the Partisans of Sharia (Islamic law) group have raged in Abyan since they seized provincial capital Zinjibar in May, and tribesmen have also been battling the Islamists.
Since January, when tens of thousands of Yemenis launched an unprecedented protest movement against President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime, militants linked to Al-Qaeda have taken advantage of the weakening of central authority to set up base in Abyan, neighboring Shabwa and in Marib further North.
