Yemen's Saleh warns opposition not to fail GCC power transfer deal

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Friday warned his opponents against risks if they renege on commitment to implement the Gulf-brokered deal for transfer power, two days after he signed it in Saudi's Riyadh in return for immunity.

"We are committed to implement the Gulf deal and its implementation mechanism, and we warn them (opponents) not to renege on their commitment," the state-run Saba news agency quoted Saleh as saying in a congratulatory message to the army and Yemeni people on the occasion of Muslim's new calendar year.
"We wish the opposition parties to implement the power-transfer deal and not to fail it through their continuing attempts of escalating tension, repeating attacks on the army and security camps, igniting war, cutting off roads and carrying out subversive acts against electricity supplies and oil and gas pipelines," Saleh said.
Sporadic clashes between the government forces, and the pro- protest defected army and dissident armed tribesmen have reportedly taken place over Thursday night in the capital Sanaa and southern restive province of Taiz.
The landmark signing of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) deal, which came after a 10-month-old political deadlock, took place in Riyadh on Wednesday.
Under the deal, Saleh handed power to his deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in return for immunity from prosecution, which has been rejected by some protesters.
In the meantime, Hadi is working to arrange early presidential elections in 90 days. A ruling party official said that Hadi is due to announce a new prime minister within 48 hours.
The 10-month unrest almost brought the impoverished Arab state on the verge of civil war and economic collapse.
