The U.N. Security Council threatened on Tuesday to impose sanctions on an al Qaeda faction and others who disrupt Yemen's transition to democracy after the end of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh's 33-year rule. In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-nation body demanded "the cessation of all actions aimed at undermining the Government of National Unity and the political transition."

Yemeni troops backed by armed tribesmen routed al-Qaida on Tuesday from two southern strongholds the terror network had held for more than a year, the most significant victory so far in a monthlong offensive against a local franchise that has tried time and again to bomb U.S.-bound planes.

Yemen officials: Saleh to depart for Oman
Yemeni officials say outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh will leave soon to Oman, en route to medical treatment in the United States. Washington has been trying to get Saleh out of Yemen — though not to settle in the U.S. — to allow a peaceful transition from his rule. However, there appear to be differences whether Saleh would remain in exile.

UN envoy to call on speeding up int'l aid to rebuild Yemen
Minister of Planning and International Cooperation revealed Wednesday that the ministry is preparing currently an urgent plan for economic recovery. During his meeting with UN envoy to Yemen Jamal bin Omar, Mohammed al-Sa'adi pinned hopes on a vital role to be played by UN to mobilize regional and international support to assist the National Reconciliation Government to meet the transitional phase requirements, overcome the political crisis's repercussions, restore the infrastructure and basic services and improve the citizens' living conditions.
Al-Sa'adi briefed the UN envoy on intention to re-list the development priorities included in the 4th five-year plan for economic and social development and poverty reduction in harmony with the requirements of the coming stage.
